On Tuesday 25th June, 25 year 8 students from Whitmore High School went to Techniquest for a day of inspirational talks and fun filled activities.
The day started with a talk from 4 different speakers, all of which had chosen to study Science to degree level or higher. The students listened intently whilst the speakers shared their stories. One student said that the talk made her “consider a future career in nanotechnology.”
Students then had some free time to explore Techniquest before getting stuck into the next activity… thinking caps on! Students had to move around the room depending on what they thought was the correct answer. Winners were Jay Forsyth and Harrison Dobbs – well done boys!
The finale included observing a series of experiments that demonstrating the properties of different atoms from the periodic table.
“Cover your ears!”
The demonstrators showed us what happens when pure oxygen reacts with hydrogen to make a highly reactive fuel! Definitely not one to be done in the classroom.
Students from Pencoedtre High School also came and it was great to see students integrating so well. Overall, a wonderful day with excellent students which hopefully inspired some to consider a future career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths).
