In summer 2019, 8 pupils and 2 teachers from the newly formed Whitmore High School, will be travelling to Sri Lanka. They will continue a tradition started in Barry Comprehensive School in 2009, supporting and working with the charity HelpLanka. During the trip, the group will be visiting local Sri Lankan schools and orphanages, that have been impacted by the Tsunami in 2004 and the Civil War, which lasted 25 years. Until the trip in the summer, pupils will be tasked with fundraising. They have a range of school and community events in the pipeline. They are hoping for support from local companies, by either sponsors to the cause or donating gifts that will be used as raffle prizes. The funding raised will be used to support the schools and orphanages by buying teaching materials, toys, sports equipment and art and crafts, as well as to partly fund the trip for the pupils. The pupils will also be creating lesson packs for the schools as they will be delivering English and Maths lessons whilst out in Sri Lanka.
If you or your company would like to donate raffle or auction prizes or would like to donate any money towards HelpLanka, please contact Henriette Bertheux or Chloe Sutton at Whitmore High School on 01446 411411.
